The call for articles from the Food and Sacred Dossier of Religião e Sociedade Magazine is now open. The deadline for submitting proposals is November 16, 2021.
In this dossier, we invite reflection on processes of elaboration, distribution, consumption, prohibitions and other concepts and actions around food, which promote the rapprochement between food and the sacred.
Food is a highly visible topic, through the multiplication of reality shows, cooking programs, gastronomy courses, vegetarian movements and slow food, debates on agroecology and certification, public policies on nutrition and food security and the marketing of organic products.
In the academic sphere, the flourishing of the interdisciplinary area of Food Studies. However, a contact zone that is still little explored is the interface of these fields with the sacred, in a broad sense.
In the most different religions, food (or its deprivation) assumes a fundamental dimension, whether in terms of the production of sociability and hierarchies, or in ritual situations, relating to ways of doing religion. It also involves itself in processes of sacralization of the body, living beings, nature or in notions of illness and cure, purity and danger, relevant not only among demarcated religious lineages, but in association with diffuse spiritualities.
Therefore, it is the interest of this dossier to bring together investigations that deal with subjects such as food taboos, sacrifices, dietary patterns, culinary and body preparations, religious slaughter and ritual consumption, patrimonialization of religious culinary know-how, food and healing (between the physical and the spiritual ) and other related themes, within the scope of social sciences, in which religion and sacred, in a broad sense, are associated.
