How do information and collective organization transform the lives of family members of incarcerated individuals?

With the aim of strengthening the struggle, the "Warriors for Decarceration" understands that the empowerment and legal-political training of family members of incarcerated individuals and survivors of incarceration are central to confronting inequality and violence.
The training program is heading towards its 5th edition!
On August 8th, next Saturday, the Warriors for Decarceration program begins another cycle in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The fifth edition returns to its starting point: in partnership with the State Front for Decarceration, a collective that conceived and designed the training in collaboration with ISER. The new cycle focuses on promoting knowledge about the prison system and brings together a group of 25 people from different locations in Rio de Janeiro.
The group is composed mostly of women: mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters. They are the ones who maintain family ties with incarcerated individuals, face long visiting lines, long commutes, and a routine marked by a lack of information about their rights.
Since 2022, the Warriors for Decarceration has been expanding knowledge and mobilizing territories. The training has already taken place in different cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro: From Petrópolis to Três Rios, from Campos dos Goytacazes to the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Over 100 participants have already taken part in the training, sharing experiences and knowledge about how the justice system works, police approaches, and ways to claim their rights, which are often denied to them.
Despite all the challenges and inequalities presented, the Warriors for Decarceration program restores the meaning of the word humanity. Ane Rocha, advisor and researcher in Rights and the Justice System at ISER, affirms that the impact of the training is immeasurable. “We plant a seed. When they return, they tell us that they helped another mother, organized a group, or managed to secure rights for someone in the community. There’s no way to quantify that.”, scores.
