In the 1990s, ISER carried out an unprecedented survey on the growth of the evangelical segment called “O Novo Nascimento: evangelicals at home, in the church and in politics”, a study that guided several other studies in the Social Sciences. Publication in book form, available on the ISER website, is, to this day, a mandatory reference for any researcher on the subject. Thirty years later, ISER starts the project “From New Birth to New Evangelical Configurations”, whose objective is to contribute to reducing the deletion of data, identifying changes and continuities in the practices of one of the most important religious segments of the last two decades. This new mapping of evangelicals, to be carried out in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, aims to reveal the new (and old) religious practices of this segment "in the church, at home and in politics" and has as its fundamental reference the research carried out in the 1990s. 1990, updated, of course, by new and pressing issues, including digitally mediated ways of living religion.
Registration is open for the Axé-Amém 2026 training program.
AXÉ-AMÉM is an in-person political-pedagogical training program offered by ISER – Institute for Religious Studies, which promotes dialogue and encounters between Black evangelical and/or Afro-Brazilian religious practitioners, focusing on the possibility of coexistence, cooperation, and the construction of collective strategies to confront religious racism in Brazil.
