The Organic Urban Agriculture Front is an action created within the Sustainable Rio City Program, an initiative conceived by the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development – CEBDES – with the support of other organizations, including Iser.
Inserted in the context of mobilization activities for Rio + 20, the Rio Sustainable City Program was structured on different thematic fronts: sustainability and social participation as central axes. Thus, Iser was invited to participate in the working group on urban family farming, responsible for boosting the Organic Urban Agriculture Front. The Project's first area of coverage was the communities of Chapéu Mangueira and Babilônia.
The main objective of the Front was to promote practices of organic urban agriculture through the training of residents in food and medicinal gardens, management of production systems and distribution of production in the participating communities. In terms of results, we highlight the mobilization of local organizations, residents and community leaders around the initiative, the implementation of 10 gardens during the formation process and four gardens created by the residents themselves.
