Homicides in Rio de Janeiro: it is possible to reduce, it is possible to prevent!

A throwback scenario

In view of the current scenario of deterioration of public policies in the state of Rio de Janeiro and in Brazil, it is essential that researchers, civil society organizations, activists and social movements establish a public agenda in the field of security that opposes the ongoing setbacks.

At the national level, things are no better. Alexandre de Moraes, at the time Minister of Justice, current Minister of the Federal Supreme Court, in a press conference stated that “more weapons and less research” are needed to deal with the problem of violence in the country. The National Homicide Reduction Pact, which never took off during the Dilma government, was shelved once and for all by Temer's ministry. This is an agenda that would respond to an old and urgent demand in the field of security policies in Brazil, where around 60,000 people are murdered each year. More than removing homicides from the priority agenda, the Ministry of Justice, under Alexandre de Moraes, and, later, the Ministry of Public Security under Raul Jungmann, promoted a tightening of the repressive posture on the part of the State, with
the war on drugs and state truculence on the agenda.
